Ghana Election 2012 related apps/websites

Election 2012 is just around the corner and as expected, the energetic and passionate developer community is taking the opportunity to churn out as many relevant applications as possible.

I can't say technology is playing a bigger role than it did 4 years ago. It is however playing some kind of role, from the Electoral Commission, to the candidates who have included social media in their campaigns.

The following are some of the election related applications that have caught my attention.

1. Peace Pledge App: ASOMDWE

A mobile application by Bernard Adjei that allows people to pledge peace worldwide, especially during elections. You can sign your peace pledge and share with the rest of the world. It is currently available in the Google Play Store and can be used elsewhere besides Ghana (Maybe Kenya in the coming election ;)

2. Ghana Votes 2012

Ghana Votes 2012 is an African Elections project developed and designed using ushahidi to display reports from the various election bodies, civil society groups and citizens on the 2012 elections.

3. Reporting on Ghana's Presidency

Reporting on Ghana's Presidency is a website that seeks to share unbiased, positive and factual reporting regardless of who (which party) wins the December 7th election through weekly updates, news posts, pictures and video snippets on the office of Ghana's presidency. They are pushing the envelope for excellent journalism while following one of sub-Saharan Africa's most prominent democratic leaders through the challenges and privileges of the office.

4. VoteKast Africa

VoteKast Africa reports elections results in an interactive, comprehensive and user friendly manner. Election news and results for a country are reported in a timely fashion as they are released by the relevant Electoral Council.

VoteKast Ghana Android app is ready to download on Google Play

5. EC SMS Voter verification

The Electoral Commission of Ghana some few months ago launched an SMS platform with Mobile Content to help registered voters check/confirm their Constituency, Polling Station & Status as a Registered Voter by SMS. Text your voter ID Number to 1413 on all mobile networks and you will get a feedback in some few seconds.

7. Ghana Vote Compass

This is another interesting and interactive tool built to help your find where you belong politically. This tool focuses more on the issues raised by the various political parties. If you answer 30 questions, you get an interesting graph and analysis. After trying this, you probably will change your mind on which party thinks in more like you and has your interests at heart.

8. Odekro

Odekro proposes a national intervention, that seeks to empower communities and marginalized populations to promote transparency, accountability and democratic governance through citizen action and engagement with relevant government agencies. Specifically, the intervention will focus on the Parliament/Legislature of Ghana.

EC isn't prepared to take technology to the next level in Elections

In Election 2012, Ghana's EC introduces a new process to verify voters before they are allowed to cast their vote. This was in the form of biometric verification, a good idea but poorly not so well implemented.

Be a part of the experience, and make sure your Polling Station is represented on Google Maps!

Excited to see the number of polling stations that have been mapped by Ghanaian voters. It is validation of the belief in the internet’s role in helping to ensure that the 2012 elections will be the best ever held in Ghana.
